Ella’s tree-mendous effort: Donating 100 native trees for a greener Karratha

Karratha Year 12 student Ella Dale is on a mission to transform Karratha’s landscape – one tree at a time.

A 2023 Future Female Leader Program alumnus, Ella’s social impact project Greener Karratha (previously Reseed Rural) has seen her grow 100 native trees, which she is now offering for free to local residents, businesses, schools, and community groups to help beautify and green her community.

Ella, who established a native plant nursery at St Luke’s College, was inspired by the City of Karratha’s investment in planting mature trees along local roads. Recognising both the beauty and environmental benefits of these efforts, she decided to take action herself – offering trees at no cost to the community.

“Karratha is an incredible place to live, but it can be harsh and dry. By planting trees, we’re creating shade, supporting wildlife, and making our town even more beautiful for future generations. This is my way of giving back,” says Ella.

The trees available for adoption include River Red Gums, Currajong, and Golden Shower (Cassia Fistula) – all hardy, drought-resistant species suited to Karratha’s climate. Community members are encouraged to plant them in visible public spaces where they can provide the greatest benefit.

Ella is calling on the Residents of Karratha to help promote the project and support the long-term sustainability of her native nursery initiative, ensuring a greener future for the region.

“The trees are ready to go now – I just need people who are willing to plant them and care for them,” she says.

“It’s a simple way to make a big impact.”
